Our featured guest host was Megan York, who currently serves as the System and Service Education Specialist for the automated instruments at Gilson, Inc. She received a B.A. in Chemistry with a German minor from Kalamazoo College in southwest Michigan, and spent a year in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar studying chemistry at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. As part of the Gilson Knowledge Center, Megan trains both Gilson customers and the network of Gilson employees and distributors worldwide. In addition to training, Megan collaborates with Gilson customers and industry to provide examples of automated solutions that help to advance and simplify their science.

 TOPIC:  The Importance of Glycomics
DETAILS:  Our guest host discusses the importance of glycobiology, where it will be in 20 years, advances in sample preparation and sample analysis techniques.
Our featured guest host was Seth Hanson from Gilson, Inc.  Seth received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.  Prior to joining Gilson, Seth had worked for nearly a decade as a bench scientist, working on yeast meiosis, murine lens development, and most recently preclinical drug development for Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.  At Gilson, Seth is the Protein Application and Education Specialist, where he creates applications and educates employees and customers on Gilson products and various Biological topics.

DETAILS:  Our guest host discusses the SPE theory as a review and foundation, how to get started with SPE and method development considerations, method optimization techniques, industry trends and new technologies, and some automation solutions that advance science.
Our featured guest host was Michael Rummel from Phenomenex.  Michael is the Sample Preparation Product Manager for Phenomenex, which includes their line of SPE products.  Michael has been with Phenomenex for over 5 years, providing training and seminars, as well as application and technical notes on sample preparation.

Gilson-Hosted Spring Solid Phase Extraction Prior to Contaminants Analysis Web Seminar
TOPIC:  Sample Preparation for Methods for the Analysis of Contaminants in Water and Soil - the Role of Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)
DETAILS:  Our hosts discussed sample preparation requirements for environmental contaminant analysis in water and soil.  Our hosts explained how utilizing solid phase extraction (SPE) can increase efficiency in the laboratory and improve analytical results.  Challenges with sample preparation prior to LC/MS and other mass spectrometry analysis methods were also discussed.
Featured guest hosts included Imma Ferrer, Ph.D. and E. Michael Thurman, Ph.D. at the Center for Environmental Mass Spectrometry, Dept. of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering, University of Colorado - Boulder, Boulder, CO, USA and Curtis Hedman at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, Madison, WI, USA.

TOPIC:  Applications & Techniques Connected to Clinical and Forensic Test Kits
DETAILS:  Our hosts discussed their innovative uses of pipettes for clinical and diagnostic test kits.  Our featured speakers were Dr. Steven Goodman of Microscopy Innovations in Marshfield, Wisconsin and John Middleton, Director of Systems Development, at Qualigen.  Learn about the scientific advances in clinical and forensic kits and how to optimize liquid handling steps for best results.  Our guest host will bring information on new and innovative applications for these test kits and how they can be used to improve turnaround time and test accuracy.
